Senior Data / Power BI Engineer – Databricks + Genie

About the Role

We’re hiring on behalf of a specialist Databricks consultancy — an inner-circle partner with 150+ Databricks projects delivered and direct access to product roadmaps and private previews. Our client asked us to run this search confidentially, so we’ll name them on the first call.

This isn’t pipeline maintenance. You’ll own semantic models end to end inside the Databricks ecosystem, on datasets of 10M–70M rows where sub-second response for concurrent users is the standard, not the stretch goal. The centrepiece project is a migration of legacy WebFOCUS reporting into Power BI: 1,500+ columns and 800+ dynamic filters of undocumented business logic that someone has to deconstruct and rebuild properly.

You’ll also be the technical bridge — between business stakeholders, UX designers and the Databricks engineers. If you’d rather write DAX in silence than lead a technical discussion with a client, this isn’t your role.

What You’ll Do

Semantic Modeling & Performance

  • Tune Direct Lake models at scale — 10M–70M rows, sub-second performance under concurrent load, beyond standard Import / DirectQuery patterns.
  • Own the calculation layer: write, test and ship production DAX — iterators, complex filter context, time intelligence — and own its accuracy and performance.
  • Optimise the full BI chain alongside data engineers on Delta Lake tables (V-Order, partitioning, compaction) so downstream BI consumption is fast by design.

Legacy Migration

  • Lead the WebFOCUS → Power BI migration: deconstruct 1,500+ columns and 800+ dynamic filters of undocumented business logic, rebuild as streamlined modern BI assets.

Security & Delivery

  • Implement Row-Level Security for complex financial access patterns.
  • Ship through CI/CD (Jenkins + BitBucket) for BI artefacts.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Translate business requirements into technical BI work across a multi-vendor environment, with designers working in Figma.
  • Lead technical discussions with client stakeholders and manage expectations directly.

Requirements

  • 4+ years in Data Analytics / BI, including 3+ years of intensive Power BI development.
  • Hands-on Databricks experience — non-negotiable; the client has turned down strong Power BI profiles without it.
  • Hands-on experience with Databricks Genie.
  • Advanced DAX — performance-tuned measures, iterators, filter manipulation, time intelligence.
  • Star Schema modelling and Medallion Architecture in practice, not just in theory.
  • English C1+ — you’ll be leading technical discussions and managing stakeholder expectations directly.

We hire on demonstrated experience, not on diplomas. If you can show the work, the degree line on your CV doesn’t decide this.

Nice to Have

  • Direct Lake tuning on models above 10M rows.
  • Migration experience out of a legacy reporting platform (WebFOCUS, Cognos, MicroStrategy, BusinessObjects).
  • RLS design for financial or otherwise sensitive access patterns.
  • CI/CD for BI artefacts (Jenkins, BitBucket, Azure DevOps).
  • Databricks certifications.

What’s On Offer

  • 100% Remote — full flexibility on where you work from.
  • Cooperation model — B2B contract only.
  • High-end hardware — Apple MacBook Air M4 15” provided.
  • Certification support — full coverage for all Databricks technical certifications.
  • Career growth — a track to the top tiers of Databricks expertise (Champion-level programmes), shaped around your career direction.
  • Expert mentorship — direct collaboration with Databricks MVPs and core product teams.
  • Visibility — conference speaking and thought-leadership opportunities if personal branding matters to you.
  • Referral bonus — for bringing other senior engineers into the team.

Rates are set per profile. Tell us your expectation on the first call and we’ll tell you straight away whether it’s in range — no wasted rounds.

Hiring Process

  1. Screening call (30 min) — background, expectations, rate range, mutual fit.
  2. Technical interview (60 min) — Power BI, DAX and Databricks deep dive.
  3. Client interview — project context and team fit.
  4. Decision & offer — fast feedback either way, no radio silence.

We’re former software engineers, so the screening call is a technical conversation, not a keyword check. We’ll tell you what the project actually looks like — including the parts that are hard.
